Grand Paris! Think of a romantic trip to Europe, and the City of Lights springs immediately to mind! And why not? It’s a beautiful city. Easy to navigate. And the sights! Well, there is no shortage of sights. And because of the combination of tourist attractions, food, and romance, it is one of the most popular destinations in the world.

So what do you want to do in this grand city? The museums? The Monuments? The markets? The bookstalls along the Seine? Is it the food that attracts you at world class restaurants, or do you just want to sit in a sidewalk cafe and watch the world go by?

There are so many “must sees” that you really will have to choose what is most important to you. Monuments? How about the Eiffel Tower. The Place de la Concorde with it’s Egyptian obelisk. Think of the line up of the Arc du Triomphe du Carrousel through the Tuileries to the Arc de Triomphe, and the grand Grande Arche in La Defense district. Or how about Invalides where Napoleon is buried.

Landmark churches? Start with Notre Dame de Paris. The Basilique du Sacre-Coeur… dramatic and white on the hill in Montmartre. The churches of La Madeleine, Sainte-Chapelle, and the Pantheon. Or just landmark buildings like the Palais Garnier.

There are so many world class museums that it would take your entire vacation to see them. The Louvre, the Musee d’Orsay, the Musee Rodin and the Musee Picasso to name some of the most obvious. Museums can make your head spin after a few hours. To avoid being overwhelmed by them, get a museum card. They are available for 1, 3 and 5 days.

The card will allow you can go in and out of the museums over the period of your stay and not get “museum head”. The museums are fantastic, but you want to get a feel for all of Paris don’t you?

Take time to stroll in a garden or two. The Tuileries stretches in front of the Louvre. The Luxembourg Garden is a great place to watch children of all ages sail small boats on the ponds. Sit in one of the cafes and have a glass of wine.

Wander in some of the neighborhoods. See Montparnasse with it’s artists and cafes. See the delectable food displays in stores around La Madeleine. Explore the Latin Quarter… see the Sorbonne and visit a bistro or two. Or just wander along the Seine and see what the booksellers have in those green metal boxes.

The food is… well so French and wonderful. You can certainly eat expensive meals at restaurants with who knows how many Michelin stars, but the food will be good almost everywhere. Pop into any bistro or neighborhood restaurant and order a “prix fixe” menu and you are sure to have a great meal. You have to try the favorite street food of Parisians…. crepes… try one with Nutella, or sugar and butter.

Food, wine, lots of action….. If we haven’t got you packing your bags for Paris, we hope we at least have you dreaming of the City of Lights.

Isn’t it hard navigating Paris on your own? You’ve heard that they won’t speak anything but French, that the waiters are rude, and the shopkeepers are impolite. It’s really not true. Paris is a big city, and its citizens sometimes have that “big city attitude”…. people are hurried and may seem a bit brusque, but if you remember some of the simple rules of travel, you’ll do fine.

First thing you need to remember is to bring your sense of adventure and appreciate the differences. The French are more reserved than most Americans. They may not be as quick to smile at strangers, but with a little effort on your part you’ll find friendly, helpful Parisians.

Second, whenever you open your mouth, attempt to say a few words in French. Saying hello, please and thank you in French will go a long way. They will appreciate it. Try to say it with a French accent… you probably won’t succeed, but this will win you friends too. And they’ll probably ask if you would prefer to speak English.

OK, now that we’ve gotten you past your fear of people problems when navigating Paris, let’s talk about physically getting around.

First thing, be sure to bring good walking shoes. You will be doing lots of walking… with the sights and the atmosphere of Paris, you’ll be looking around thinking, “This is Paris… I’m here!”

But you don’t want to walk aimlessly, so let’s look at the geography of Paris. Many Paris locations are described as being either left-bank or right bank. What does that mean? To get real basic… the River Seine cuts Paris pretty much in half. So the Left Bank is more or less to the south of the River Seine. (Look at a map of Paris… it’s mostly the bottom half.) The Right Bank is to the north of the river. (So, the top half of the map.. right?)

Old Paris hands will tell you, “Oh, I stayed in the 6th Arrondissement.” Or the 16th (a wealthy neighborhood on the Right Bank near the Bois de Boulogne) or the 1st (the center of Paris where the Louvre and Palais Royal are) or whatever.

The arrondissements are the districts that the city is divided into. There are 20 of them. You really don’t need to know them for navigating Paris. You’ll see them on addresses, and they are marked on maps, but you don’t need to know them to get around…. though you might want to find out which arrondissement you decide to stay in, so you can say to your friends, “Oh WE stayed in the 7th!” (You would then have stayed near the Eiffel Tower and the Musee d’Orsay.)

You’ll want to walk and walk, but to see more of the sights, you can’t walk everywhere. Take the Metro to the next neighborhood and start walking again. You’ll soon know where your landmarks are, and they will help you get your bearings.

You can also use the Paris bus system and taxis to get around or take a leisurely bateau on the Seine to see the sights. However you get around, you’ll soon find that navigating Paris isn’t hard.

The aim is simple, but the execution will be a great challenge: starting January 2008, a team of seven international adventurers, and two drivers, will pilot a mammoth, 16.5m long, specially configured bus on a journey from Budapest, Hungary, right across Western Europe and North Africa to Bamako, Mali and back. Known as the Bus Number 7 project, the team are preparing to cover well over 20,000km.

Along the way the team will have to tackle every obstacle imaginable, from sand storms, impenetrable Saharan sand-dunes to the daunting African border control, all with only their wits and a good slice of luck to rely on. The journey will break boundaries never before crossed as it makes a record-breaking crossing of the Sahara in a first for a vehicle of its kind.

For such an epic journey, the team are fortunately well-prepared, with a wealth of experience adversity between them. Team leader Aravind Bremanandam, spends most of his spare time organising the Autorickshaw Challenge, a project he set up back in 2006 and which sees teams from around the world driving the legendary 3-wheelers right across India. Fellow team-mate Attila Berényi is a veteran of the 2006 and 2007 Budapest-Bamako rallies, which will be of great value as the Bus Number 7 project will be the star participant of the Budapest Bamako 2008 rally on its outward journey.

More than just a journey though, the Bus Number 7 project’s mission is to use this incredible journey as not-for-profit event raising money for the local children of Western Africa . The team see the positive power and popularity of sport as a suitable partnering spirit for the project to brighten the lives of these children, and aim to deliver sports equipment to schools and villages in collaboration with community leaders. Furthermore, Bus Number 7 aims to become an institution in itself, with the voyage to Africa just the beginning of things to come. After the initial journey to Bamako , the Bus will spend months touring Europe to promote the project and raise awareness of its charity mission.

First, if you are planning a trip to Europe, and haven’t thought of visiting Iceland, you really should consider it. Yes, there are a lot of great destinations; Europe, and the world for that matter, are full of them. Many people want to visit Rome, or London, or Paris; all great places, no question. But, what you may or may not realize is that those places are so crowded during peak seasons, it’s insane. You have to wait in lines, wait in traffic – get ready for a lot of waiting. I am not saying those places are worth waiting for.

Iceland is a relative new-comer to the global travel scene and, by comparison, is much less crowded but no less beautiful. In fact, many Europeans, especially the French, Germans and the Brits consider Iceland kind of like a European national park of sorts. If unspoiled nature and spectacular landscapes is your bag, look to Iceland.

But I digress. Many people, when visiting a new country or place, opt for a bus tour to see the highlights. They are an affordable and efficient way to see the sites. You can see what all the other tourists have seen so when you meet a person at a party and tell them you visited some new country, you can tell them, “Ya, I saw the (insert monument, historical landmark here).”

But, Iceland is a natural paradise and one of the best ways to really experience it is to get off the beaten path. The buses can’t do that. So, I am suggesting an adventure jeep tour. They can take you places, in the same level of comfort that the tour buses can’t reach. I am talking crossing stream, driving on glaciers, sandy beaches, or taking you up close and personal with a volcano. That’s what Iceland offers. One a clear day in Iceland you can see as far as your eyes permit in brilliant colors. You will see an amazing diversity of flora and fauna. You will get to experience nature as it should be: clean and unspoiled. You can even drink water from a stream, something I, sadly, wouldn’t recommend almost anywhere else in the world.

Convinced? Here’s what you should know about Iceland besides all the pretty stuff. Iceland is expensive and not for the faint of heart. Get ready for it. Food, fuel, lodging and alcohol are amongst the most expensive in Europe. My advice is to stay in a hostel, make your own lunches and buy your liquor from the state run stores called, “VinBud,” (pronounced: veen-booth) which translates literally to, “Wine Store.” Iceland has notoriously capricious weather. It could be raining one minute, sunny the next and snowing the next after that. And, it is rarely warm. On a good Summer day the temperature could hit 70 degrees Fahrenheit, but it is more likely to be in the 50s. Be prepared. Other then that, it’s all good.

Bus tours are fine, especially if you are in a city like Rome, or any other metropolitan area. But, Iceland is different and to really see and experience what it has to offer it is my opinion that you need to skip the bus tour and head off-road in a super jeep. You took a vacation to get away from it all, so do it right, do it like a Viking.

Coach tours can mean a lot of things—it could spell fun, excitement, nature, outdoors, sightseeing, relaxation, vacation, and the list goes on. If you’re going to summarize everything, though, it means that coach tours offer pleasure and comfort. That’s why, it’s important that you only get to pick the right one—the motor coach that can offer you these intangible benefits.

IMG and Coach Tours

When it comes to coach tours, there is only one company that you can trust: IMG, or the International Motor Group. This is a company that is composed of different transport providers and operators found all over the world, such as in the UK. With this alone, you know that availing of a coach tour will never pose any problem.

Here are some more benefits:

1. You can cover a lot of the best vacation spots in any country. The coach tour can go as far as the countryside of London or the Big Apple or Mount Rushmore. This means that it can travel to far distances, allowing you to fully maximize your payment for such a trip.

2. They have great connections to different parts of the world. The IMG company operates in all of the major cities and countries all over the world. You can find them in UK and other parts of Europe, Asia, North America, Australia, and South America. If you’re inter-traveling, which means you’re moving from one location to another, you can just allow IMG branches to coordinate with one another and provide you with the transportation that you need.

3. They can set up packages for you. Besides being a network of independent transport service providers and operators, IMG also has affiliations to a variety of hotels, airlines, rail lines, and even cruises. If you’re planning an all-out vacation for the team or for your class, the company can set up coach tours for you, which can already include hotel accommodation, airport transfers, and sightseeing tours. This way, the trip becomes more economical and practical.

4. You can transfer the coach tour package to others. If, for any reason, you can’t go on with the planned coach tour, you can always transfer it to somebody else, provided that the tour operator belongs to IMG. If you want to make a confirmation, you can always call the customer support of the company. This is to make sure that your investment will not be put to waste.

5. You will only get nothing but the best-rate coaches all over UK. The buses used in motor coach tours are considered to be first-rate. There are reclining and cushioned seats, air-conditioning system, entertainment facilities, a no-smoking area, and other amenities, which can guarantee comfortable and luxurious traveling. They also come in different seating capacities, so there’s no way that you can get stuck to one that hardly sits all of you.

Coach tours with IMG are always pleasant simply because the company exerts a lot of effort in making their customers happy. Hence, if you are searching for maximum comfort during your coach tours, all you need is to give IMG a ring.
