What makes a rubble of rocks become a wonder of the world, or some chunks of metal become the most romantic place to propose marriage? After making the effort to go somewhere for sightseeing, how do you get the most out of the experience, to suit your budget, time and personality? From guidebooks to bus tours, there is a range of options to ensure that places come to life. These tips are based on experiences in Europe.
For example, there you are in Paris, at the Louvre, underneath IM Pei’s glass pyramid. Looking around the lobby, the escalators lead up towards multiple entrances to the wings of the old palace, so crammed with riches beyond compare. Where to begin?

Tour types

***No tour:

You stand in front of the Mona Lisa and say ‘eh’ before moving on to the next Da Vinci ‘eh’ then a Michelangelo ‘looks like the other dude’. I did this the first time I went to the Louvre and followed the ‘quantity not quality’ method. While I did have the time to find the little figurines in the Egyptian area, did I truly appreciate them?
Advantages: takes less time, go where you want, when you want.
Disadvantages: how would you find out how Da Vinci got the lines so fine on such a small painting (Mona Lisa) or that some guy hacked at David’s left toe with a hammer in 1991 (Accademia, Florence)? The story behind the artwork and artist is often the entertainment more than the mere physical presence.
Suited to: people on a budget, people who don’t like other people, lack of time, lone travellers

Price: nothing

***Guidebook:

Walking around with the gallery’s guide or your own book that explains who-what-when-why-how about an exhibit/place.
Advantages: pick out the bits that interest you before you see them. Find out a bit more. Comes from a sole source, approved by relevant people.
Disadvantages: May not discover other things. For instance, if you had never tried smoked herring for breakfast, you wouldn’t know whether you liked it or not. Or you might walk right past some Goya, when he’s the kind of artist that would really appeal to horror movie fans.
Suited to: people who like to study, those who have a specific interest, lone travellers

Price: varies depending on country, usually around AUD10.

***Audio guide:

hire a device to listen to tracks for selected pieces of a gallery or museum. Follow the map/guide and play the track when you get to the piece. For example to look at the Winged Victory of Samothrace at the Louvre and clog up the stairwell with other agog tourists.
Advantages: can skip bits that don’t interest you. Provides the highlights. Saves time.
Disadvantages: might miss out on pieces not included in the audio guide because you walk right past it. May be bored by the voice. Last guide I had sounding like he was sucking on a prune without about as much verbal outcome…
Suited to: Studious types who’d rather spend more time looking than reading, independent type or couple (shared earphones).
Price: varies depending on country and level of content, usually around AUD10.

***Small group (1-5 people):

Your guide knows you by name, tailors the tour to suit your timings and interests, information is more two-way rather than purely transmit. For example, I went to Auckland in July 2006 and booked in for a day of mountain biking. Yep, it was cold, windy, rainy. I was the only person, but the tour went ahead anyway. I had Bee-Bee all to myself and while we waited for the rain to ease, she did a palm reading and predicted my future as a great writer. Lucky she was also a good guide, as the palm-reading bit is yet to reveal itself!
Advantages: Get a more personal service; guide may suggest something relevant to you specially, eg for tea lovers going through caffeine withdrawal in Paris ‘you simply must go to the Mariage Frères teashop then!’ or they may suggest a restaurant near your hotel and places to avoid.
Disadvantages: usually the most pricy kind of tour and a tip is also expected. If there’s a personality clash then the day could be a drag. Also, they may be in cahoots with other businesses to try and rope you into going to restaurants, for which they receive a commission.
Advice:
—-Basically, take anything they suggest with a skeptical mind, but still be polite. The nicer you are, then the nicer they are.
—-Make sure you go with an agency, rather than some guy off the street who offers to take you around. They may be genuine, but even so, there is no administrative control/insurance etc.
Suited to: Those who are after the genuine experience, ie the custom-made Spanish omelette rather than a McDonalds siesta burger; those who have a bit more money
Price: Depends on the country. In Western Europe = around $AUD90 per person (then a tip)

***Big group:

Usually about 10-20 people wearing earphones to pick up on the guide’s voice as they lead you around, stopping you at exhibits/interests to give their spiel eg ‘ This 18th century china bowl has the utmost significance, for it was used to….’
Advantages: Makes what would be boring in a book, come to life— assuming you get a good guide. In Florence, we had Christina, an art student who truly enjoyed what she did and made sense of the iron rings hanging off centuries-old walls so forever after, I know what they mean.
If you enjoy people, sometimes the tour groups have lunch together so you can meet fellow travelers and exchange stories about dodgy restaurants.
Disadvantages:
—-inconsistent information. For example in Florence, Mum and I had three tours with the same company and three different sets of information as to a what happened to the head of Primavera, a statue on the Ponte Santa Trinita. While it’s not so important to know the facts (you can get that from books) it does detract from the experience, no matter how entertaining the description of how Giuliano Medici was dramatically assassinated during High Mass in the Duomo Cathedral in the middle of a service. And the gore that followed as his brother Lorenzo tracked down the assassins and conspirators.
—-The Chic or Geek factor. For the style conscious and teenagers, you may cringe at looking like a dick walking around with stickers and earplugs. Unless you’re one of the retired Americans with Hawaiian shirts who don’t seem to care.
—-Hearing Voices. Having to hear more than one language rattled off by bi-lingual tour: by the end of a day trip to Versailles, I felt I knew Spanish. Well, I knew enough that it would be hard to understand. So fast!!!
Suited to: Safe-seekers (ie non-adventurous), medium to high budget, couples and families
Price: Depends on the country. In Western Europe = around $AUD90 per person for a half-day tour. More money if lunch and transport are required.

Basically,
if you’re on a budget…use your own guide book or share an audio guide
if you like people….go the small group or big group option
if you’re time poor: no guidebook. Just wander around. At least though try to read up beforehand to see which bits you need to visit.

The winter time is a wonderful opportunity to travel and visit your friends and family. The holidays provide you with an chance to relax and take advantage of the changing environment. While this is supposed to be the time of the year to have fun and enjoy some time off, there are a variety of hazards that arise that can hinder your health and good times.

If you decide to walk around outside, you have to watch out for several different things. First, icy conditions can lead to a slippery sidewalk. To keep yourself safe, you should consider keeping at least one hand free, if not both. This way, you can catch your balance if you slide, or at least block your face if you fall. Don’t carry small children in arms that you might drop or fall with if you slip.

Many people choose to drive around during the wintertime. However, this can be very dangerous. Ice can build up on roadways and especially bridges. Be sure you leave extra space between you and the next car so that you have time to correct your car or avoid the other person’s vehicle should it go out of control. Consider driving slower than usual to keep your car under control.

Additionally, if you are driving in a snowy area or when it is snowing, you may want to get special snow tires. You can get tires with studs on them to give you a better grip, or you can special snow chains to wrap around your tires to give them more traction. It is a good idea to drive a vehicle with four-wheel drive capability to help you if you start to slide in snow.

If your car gets caught in a snow drift, do not spin your wheels as it can get you caught even deeper in the snow. Try to dig the snow out from around your tires, and you may consider carrying kitty litter or sand with you that you can sprinkle on the surface to help you get out. If you do have to stay caught in the snow, do not let snow build up around your exhaust pipe if you plan to keep your engine running. This can prevent carbon monoxide from escaping, which can poison and kill the people in the car.

Sometimes, if you are having to travel further away, you may choose to fly. If you take a plane, you should be sure to stay updated on the weather surrounding your takeoff location and destination to see if you will leave and arrive on time. You may want to schedule extra time between connecting flights in case the first flight is delayed.

Sadly, even the most safety-conscious person can encounter winter hazards and injuries. Things like defective snow tires, improperly maintained roadways, and other such things can all contribute to winter personal injuries.

If you or someone you know has suffered from a personal injury, you should speak to a lawyer about your rights. To find a personal injury lawyer in your area, check out the Legal City Attorney Search Directory today.

We all need a nice holiday break – thats the truth, but it can be a hassle booking flights, hotels and transfers to and from hotels and airports. The main reason for a holiday is about relaxation and a stress free exsistance. However, there is a way to stop all the hassle by booking yourself an All Inclusive holiday, which leaves you free to plan your daily activities.

No matter what holiday destination you choose or what you plan to do there, you always have the option to save a little money by choosing an all inclusive package. Basically, an all inclusive holiday is a package deal that lumps the cost of flights, hotel, transfers, and board into one price – a price that is usually considerably lower than it would be if you chose to pay for all of these things separately. These holidays provide accommodation at resorts and hotels that offer luxurious amenities at competitive prices.

When booking an all inclusive holiday, there are three main options to choose from. Your first choice in booking is to visit a high street travel agency in your home town. A travel agent will have the ability to show you a wide variety of destinations if you are unsure of the perfect holiday destination, but they will also have a plethora of all inclusive holiday packages that meet your wants and needs. Once you have decided, the travel agent handles all of the booking and simply send the information on to you before you fly. Be aware that travel agents have to make money somehow, and their fees are usually hidden in the cost of booking. With that being said, you might save more by making your holiday plans online yourself. By searching online for all inclusive holidays, you will find many websites that offer information and reviews to help you choose your package holiday. All bookings can be made online, which means the entire holiday can be planned from the comforts of your own home. Finally, if you have a particular resort or hotel in mind, you can simply telephone their front desk and ask if they offer all inclusive deals. If so, you can then request information to be sent to your home. These options are a good way to get the necessary information required to book your ideal all inclusive holiday.

What are the pros and cons of all inclusive holidays? To begin with, an all inclusive holiday implies that meals and drinks including alcohol are provided by the hotel or resort in which you are staying. For a restaurant lover, this might not be the best idea and perhaps a drinks inclusive holiday would be a better choice. That means that the flights, accommodation and drinks only are covered in the same price, but meals are not. However, for a family holiday, all inclusive takes the stress and expense out of finding a restaurant two or three times a day.

Meals are not the only way that money is saved by booking an all inclusive holiday. Hotels and flights can be expensive when booked individually, by choosing all inclusive, you are sure to get the biggest discount by sacrificing a few minor details. For example, if everything were booked separately, this would provide more options for flight times and dates but would definitely end up costing more. This issue comes into great consideration during peak travel times, such as the summer tourist season and winter holidays. At this time, flight prices go up considerably but that is also the best time to find package holiday deals all around the world.

In short, choosing this type of holiday is a great way to remove some of the stress from your travels. All inclusive holiday packages are very common, and you will find that it is extremely simple to select a package that matches up to your travel dates and financial limitations. After all, the point of a holiday is to relax and not have to worry! If you choose this type of package, you will have more money and time to spend enjoying your holiday.

After Puerto Vallarta found its way onto the international tourism map following the release of “The Night of the Iguana,” the city became a meeting place for artists, musicians and anyone seeking a cosmopolitan destination amongst incredible natural beauty. As a result, numerous festivals have developed in Puerto Vallarta, celebrating everything from independent film to haute cuisine. Throughout the year, these events welcome awestruck visitors from throughout the world and add to Puerto Vallarta’s standing as one of Mexico’s premier destinations.

Inspired by the legacy of director John Huston and his film, “The Night of the Iguana,” the Puerto Vallarta Film Festival of the Americas brings together the best independent films and documentaries from North and South America each year. Similar to the Cannes and Sundance festivals, the Puerto Vallarta Film Festival of the Americas features more than a week full of screenings supported by lectures, workshops and parties. The festival takes place each year during the first or second week of November, immediately before the beginning of peak tourism season. Families visiting Puerto Vallarta on a strict budget should consider traveling during this period as travel costs are lower, the weather is great and there is certainly plenty to experience.

Families visiting Puerto Vallarta in the weeks before the beginning of high tourism season can also participate in the city’s acclaimed Gourmet Festival. For 14 years, the Puerto Vallarta Gourmet Festival has brought together some of the world’s best chefs and the finest fare Mexico has to offer. Often, Michelin-star chefs collaborate with local restaurants to create unique menus inspired by the culture and scenery of Puerto Vallarta. Most of these dinners, along with the cooking classes and tasting events, are open to the public. The Puerto Vallarta Gourmet Festival usually takes place during the second and third weeks of November, occasionally overlapping with the Puerto Vallarta Film Festival of the Americas.

The May Cultural Festival has become a prestigious tradition in Mexico’s Jalisco state, reaching towns such as Zapopan, La Barca, Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta. Though a number of the headline performances take place in Guadalajara, Puerto Vallarta puts on a number of exhibits and performances by international artists. Each year, the festival honors a foreign country by welcoming the visual artists and musical performers that represent the finest each nation has to offer. This year’s festival was dedicated to Germany and featured concerts by the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra and gallery exhibits by up-and-coming German artists. Though the schedule for next year’s festival has not been announced, visitors will have a chance to experience the cultural sites of Puerto Vallarta, accompanied by the finest music and art from another unique culture. The May Cultural Festival takes place each year during the entire month of May with most major events scheduled during the final two weeks.

Puerto Vallarta is also home to the world’s newest contemporary art festival. Known officially as Puerto Vallarta: Arte Contemporaneo, the festival is designed to bring together the work of Mexican and international artists. This year, the festival focused on artists from the United States and Mexico and featured panel discussions on issues as diverse as globalization, extended borders and the cultural identities of Mexican artists working in the United States. Many of the artists featured in this year’s festival exhibited work at prestigious venues such as the Whitney Biennial and the Tate Modern in London. Puerto Vallarta: Arte Contemporaneo plans to return next year during the final weekend of May with larger exhibits and more special events.

The local art scene is celebrated each year in November during the Festival de las Artes. During the final week of the month, nearly all of Puerto Vallarta’s art galleries stage elaborate openings and events that welcome art aficionados and curious travelers alike. As much of the work on display belongs to Mexican artists, including many Puerto Vallarta residents, many of the artists are on hand at the events to discuss the trade with art lovers. Now entering its 12th season, the Festival de las Artes is one of the best ways for tourists to experience the vibrant art scene of Puerto Vallarta. Best of all, most of the events during the festival are free of charge.

Though all the events mentioned here take place in either November or May, there is no shortage of similar events throughout the year in Puerto Vallarta. When accounting for Puerto Vallarta’s incredible scenery and cosmopolitan flair, it is no wonder that the world’s best flock to the city each year. When you come to Puerto Vallarta, plan on visiting some of these festivals where you can interact with remarkable artists, chefs and filmmakers while enjoying the lush backdrop of one of Mexico’s premier destinations.

For visitors who plan on traveling to the South American country of Mexico, I will be providing you with detailed, useful information for your journey. The primary airport in Mexico City is the Benito Juarez International commonly called Mexico City International Airport. Landing at the Juan Alvarez International Airport in Acapulco will place you in close proximity to many hotels.

The Las Brisas Acapulco, The Grand Mayan Acapulco Wyndham Resort and the Camino Real Acapulco Diamante are all located in less than a five mile radius from the airport. Since taxis, buses and rental car agencies are all available inside of the airport, you will get there in no time. The airport itself is the largest international airport in Mexico’s Southern-Pacific region.

Acapulco Beaches
The La Bonfil beach is one of the best beaches in Mexico for surfing. Because of the high waves, many surfers flock here to surf. The waves are so high that swimming is actually frowned upon by the locals. Settled between Puerto Marques and Revolcadero Beach, La Bonfilso beach is a safe friendly place to visit. Caleta Beach is one of the most visited beaches located in Acapulco.

Its main attraction is the water itself. Families often come just to swim but the fishing is also excellent here. If you plan on taking a trip to Mexico just for the beach, you may want to consider a hotel reservation at The Fairmont Acapulco Princess. This four star hotel is conveniently located on Revolcadero Beach near the General Juan N Alvarez Airport. Spas, dining and golf are some of the hotel’s prominent highlights. This one of a kind hotel sits on nearly five hundred acres, with over seven hundred and fifty plant species growing.

Cozumel Restaurants
A big draw to Mexico is its authentic Mexican food prepared by the natives. The Costa Brava Restaurant of Cozumel caters traditional Mexican dishes in addition to seafood. Other restaurants include Mi Chabelita, El Moro and El Foco all located in the downtown Cozumel area. It isn’t difficult to get other styles of food in the Cozumel area either. People visiting from different parts of the world will find restaurants that serve the same meals that they are used to eating back home. For instance, Guido’s banquet facilities cater Italian food, while Tony Rome’s restaurant and bar serve up steak and shrimp. Blue Haus located inside of All Riviera Resort has an International menu that caters to everyone.

Los Cabos Mexico
There is quite a bit of entertainment activity to keep you busy year round in Los Cabos. Golfing, horseback riding, sailing, fishing and cruise tours make this one of Mexico’s most sought after destinations. Often referred to as paradise by tourist, Los Cabos warm water beaches stay that way because of the warm humid temperatures there. Summer temperatures normally stay in the mid to upper nineties with very little rain fall during that time. Snorkeling and scuba diving activity there is highly recommended.

Whether you like fun in the sun or rest and relaxation at a spa, traveling to Mexico is the way to go. Nice people, great food and perfect weather all make the trip worthwhile. Visit Cancun, Acapulco, Los Cabos, Cozumel or any of the many cities located in Mexico. Get your plane, hotel and restaurant reservations done and come experience all that Mexico has to offer.

For a real break from the stresses of life at home and work, give you and your family a fun-filled holiday by booking all inclusive. With virtually everything paid for up front it’s up to you to enjoy yourself to the full!

The beauty of all inclusive holidays is that the only thing you have to worry about is having the best time you possible can! You can relax and enjoy yourselves without having to worry about the final bill.

There are plenty of all inclusive holidays available in many of the best resorts around the world, at prices to suit all budgets. It’s not just five and four star hotels, but cheap holiday destinations as well, that can make an all inclusive holiday bargain. These are a perfect way to take the family on holiday and not worry about how much you’re all spending!

As far as food is concerned your breakfast, lunch and dinner are included in all inclusive holidays. Some hotels even include daytime snacks and afternoon tea. Meals include a variety of international and local dishes and are usually in a buffet-style.

We all like a drink on holiday and, although no one would recommend drinking to excess, all inclusive holidays give you unlimited house wine, draught beer, local spirits and soft drinks all day and night. You should note that international beer and spirits are not usually included.

It may be tempting to eat too much, but you can ease your conscience by taking part in a range of sporting activities on many all inclusive holidays. You may be an old-hand or a novice but you can try tennis, volleyball and possibly water sports such as sailing, windsurfing or diving. Some activities may need a small payment for equipment hire.

Part of the fun experience of the best holidays is the entertainment. On an all inclusive holiday, there is usually entertainment inside the hotel or resort – day and night. These can vary from discos to cabaret, and games to live music.

For a real break from the trials of day to day life, give yourself a stress-free holiday by booking all inclusive. Then, forget about your wallet, it’s up to you. Go and enjoy yourself to the full!

Every year, hundreds of thousands of business travelers go to all points of the globe. A business traveler’s personal safety is always potentially at risk – even if their destination is just a short distance away.

Below are some basic safety tips that when followed, can help make you less vulnerable when on the road.

1. Don’t Go Solo – If possible don’t travel alone. If you do have to travel alone, set up scheduled times to check in with someone at home. If you don’t check in, they will immediately know that something is wrong.

2. Be Aware – Being aware of your surroundings is one of the most important things you can do to keep yourself safe. If something seems unusual or out of place – it probably is. Trust your instincts.

3. Don’t Stand Out – Avoid behavior or dress that will make you stand out from the crowds – especially when traveling overseas.

4. Know the Area – It is important to be up to date on the area that you are traveling to. This includes any travel warnings and any regional/local issues, especially political. You should also be familiar with where you will be staying and the places you will need to visit while you are there.

Visit the State Department’s website (travel.state.gov) for information about the country you will be visiting. They will also post any travel warnings or alerts. For additional information, call the U.S. Department of Transportation Travel Advisory and Airport Safety Hotline (800-221-0673).

5. Have a Code Word – The number one way that people are kidnapped in foreign countries is by reading your name off of a sign that a driver is holding at the airport, duplicating the sign and standing in front of the real driver. To avoid this, have a code word that you can ask from the driver.

6. Your Hotel – Avoid hotels with rooms that open to the outside and rooms on the first floor. Be sure to use the extra lock on your door and to secure all valuables. Know where the emergency exits and stairwells are. In the event of an emergency, you want to know exactly where to go.

7. Meet in Public Areas – Never use your hotel room for meetings. Treat it as you would your bedroom at home – as a personal space for sleeping.

8. Know What You Have – Make photocopies of your driver license, credit cards (front and back) and passport. In case they are lost or stolen, you will know exactly what you had and for your credit cards, you can easily call the customer service numbers to cancel them. Keep the photocopies in a safe place or scan them and e-mail them to yourself. If you use a web-based e-mail service, you will be able to get to the documents anywhere you have internet access.

9. For Female Travelers – Female business travelers are at a greater risk when traveling, especially overseas. Wear a wedding ring – even if you are single. A cheap, fake ring can go a long way in deterring criminals. Also, wearing your hair down or in a pony tail should be avoided; this makes an easy way for someone to grab you.

10. Have a Plan – In case something does happen it is important to have a plan and a good support system. Discuss with your family/friends what to do in case of an emergency. The U.S. Department of State has a Citizen’s Emergency center that you can contact for assistance in case of an emergency situation abroad – 202-647-0900.
