What makes a rubble of rocks become a wonder of the world, or some chunks of metal become the most romantic place to propose marriage? After making the effort to go somewhere for sightseeing, how do you get the most out of the experience, to suit your budget, time and personality? From guidebooks to bus tours, there is a range of options to ensure that places come to life. These tips are based on experiences in Europe.
For example, there you are in Paris, at the Louvre, underneath IM Pei’s glass pyramid. Looking around the lobby, the escalators lead up towards multiple entrances to the wings of the old palace, so crammed with riches beyond compare. Where to begin?

Tour types

***No tour:

You stand in front of the Mona Lisa and say ‘eh’ before moving on to the next Da Vinci ‘eh’ then a Michelangelo ‘looks like the other dude’. I did this the first time I went to the Louvre and followed the ‘quantity not quality’ method. While I did have the time to find the little figurines in the Egyptian area, did I truly appreciate them?
Advantages: takes less time, go where you want, when you want.
Disadvantages: how would you find out how Da Vinci got the lines so fine on such a small painting (Mona Lisa) or that some guy hacked at David’s left toe with a hammer in 1991 (Accademia, Florence)? The story behind the artwork and artist is often the entertainment more than the mere physical presence.
Suited to: people on a budget, people who don’t like other people, lack of time, lone travellers

Price: nothing

***Guidebook:

Walking around with the gallery’s guide or your own book that explains who-what-when-why-how about an exhibit/place.
Advantages: pick out the bits that interest you before you see them. Find out a bit more. Comes from a sole source, approved by relevant people.
Disadvantages: May not discover other things. For instance, if you had never tried smoked herring for breakfast, you wouldn’t know whether you liked it or not. Or you might walk right past some Goya, when he’s the kind of artist that would really appeal to horror movie fans.
Suited to: people who like to study, those who have a specific interest, lone travellers

Price: varies depending on country, usually around AUD10.

***Audio guide:

hire a device to listen to tracks for selected pieces of a gallery or museum. Follow the map/guide and play the track when you get to the piece. For example to look at the Winged Victory of Samothrace at the Louvre and clog up the stairwell with other agog tourists.
Advantages: can skip bits that don’t interest you. Provides the highlights. Saves time.
Disadvantages: might miss out on pieces not included in the audio guide because you walk right past it. May be bored by the voice. Last guide I had sounding like he was sucking on a prune without about as much verbal outcome…
Suited to: Studious types who’d rather spend more time looking than reading, independent type or couple (shared earphones).
Price: varies depending on country and level of content, usually around AUD10.

***Small group (1-5 people):

Your guide knows you by name, tailors the tour to suit your timings and interests, information is more two-way rather than purely transmit. For example, I went to Auckland in July 2006 and booked in for a day of mountain biking. Yep, it was cold, windy, rainy. I was the only person, but the tour went ahead anyway. I had Bee-Bee all to myself and while we waited for the rain to ease, she did a palm reading and predicted my future as a great writer. Lucky she was also a good guide, as the palm-reading bit is yet to reveal itself!
Advantages: Get a more personal service; guide may suggest something relevant to you specially, eg for tea lovers going through caffeine withdrawal in Paris ‘you simply must go to the Mariage Frères teashop then!’ or they may suggest a restaurant near your hotel and places to avoid.
Disadvantages: usually the most pricy kind of tour and a tip is also expected. If there’s a personality clash then the day could be a drag. Also, they may be in cahoots with other businesses to try and rope you into going to restaurants, for which they receive a commission.
Advice:
—-Basically, take anything they suggest with a skeptical mind, but still be polite. The nicer you are, then the nicer they are.
—-Make sure you go with an agency, rather than some guy off the street who offers to take you around. They may be genuine, but even so, there is no administrative control/insurance etc.
Suited to: Those who are after the genuine experience, ie the custom-made Spanish omelette rather than a McDonalds siesta burger; those who have a bit more money
Price: Depends on the country. In Western Europe = around $AUD90 per person (then a tip)

***Big group:

Usually about 10-20 people wearing earphones to pick up on the guide’s voice as they lead you around, stopping you at exhibits/interests to give their spiel eg ‘ This 18th century china bowl has the utmost significance, for it was used to….’
Advantages: Makes what would be boring in a book, come to life— assuming you get a good guide. In Florence, we had Christina, an art student who truly enjoyed what she did and made sense of the iron rings hanging off centuries-old walls so forever after, I know what they mean.
If you enjoy people, sometimes the tour groups have lunch together so you can meet fellow travelers and exchange stories about dodgy restaurants.
Disadvantages:
—-inconsistent information. For example in Florence, Mum and I had three tours with the same company and three different sets of information as to a what happened to the head of Primavera, a statue on the Ponte Santa Trinita. While it’s not so important to know the facts (you can get that from books) it does detract from the experience, no matter how entertaining the description of how Giuliano Medici was dramatically assassinated during High Mass in the Duomo Cathedral in the middle of a service. And the gore that followed as his brother Lorenzo tracked down the assassins and conspirators.
—-The Chic or Geek factor. For the style conscious and teenagers, you may cringe at looking like a dick walking around with stickers and earplugs. Unless you’re one of the retired Americans with Hawaiian shirts who don’t seem to care.
—-Hearing Voices. Having to hear more than one language rattled off by bi-lingual tour: by the end of a day trip to Versailles, I felt I knew Spanish. Well, I knew enough that it would be hard to understand. So fast!!!
Suited to: Safe-seekers (ie non-adventurous), medium to high budget, couples and families
Price: Depends on the country. In Western Europe = around $AUD90 per person for a half-day tour. More money if lunch and transport are required.

Basically,
if you’re on a budget…use your own guide book or share an audio guide
if you like people….go the small group or big group option
if you’re time poor: no guidebook. Just wander around. At least though try to read up beforehand to see which bits you need to visit.

After Puerto Vallarta found its way onto the international tourism map following the release of “The Night of the Iguana,” the city became a meeting place for artists, musicians and anyone seeking a cosmopolitan destination amongst incredible natural beauty. As a result, numerous festivals have developed in Puerto Vallarta, celebrating everything from independent film to haute cuisine. Throughout the year, these events welcome awestruck visitors from throughout the world and add to Puerto Vallarta’s standing as one of Mexico’s premier destinations.

Inspired by the legacy of director John Huston and his film, “The Night of the Iguana,” the Puerto Vallarta Film Festival of the Americas brings together the best independent films and documentaries from North and South America each year. Similar to the Cannes and Sundance festivals, the Puerto Vallarta Film Festival of the Americas features more than a week full of screenings supported by lectures, workshops and parties. The festival takes place each year during the first or second week of November, immediately before the beginning of peak tourism season. Families visiting Puerto Vallarta on a strict budget should consider traveling during this period as travel costs are lower, the weather is great and there is certainly plenty to experience.

Families visiting Puerto Vallarta in the weeks before the beginning of high tourism season can also participate in the city’s acclaimed Gourmet Festival. For 14 years, the Puerto Vallarta Gourmet Festival has brought together some of the world’s best chefs and the finest fare Mexico has to offer. Often, Michelin-star chefs collaborate with local restaurants to create unique menus inspired by the culture and scenery of Puerto Vallarta. Most of these dinners, along with the cooking classes and tasting events, are open to the public. The Puerto Vallarta Gourmet Festival usually takes place during the second and third weeks of November, occasionally overlapping with the Puerto Vallarta Film Festival of the Americas.

The May Cultural Festival has become a prestigious tradition in Mexico’s Jalisco state, reaching towns such as Zapopan, La Barca, Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta. Though a number of the headline performances take place in Guadalajara, Puerto Vallarta puts on a number of exhibits and performances by international artists. Each year, the festival honors a foreign country by welcoming the visual artists and musical performers that represent the finest each nation has to offer. This year’s festival was dedicated to Germany and featured concerts by the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra and gallery exhibits by up-and-coming German artists. Though the schedule for next year’s festival has not been announced, visitors will have a chance to experience the cultural sites of Puerto Vallarta, accompanied by the finest music and art from another unique culture. The May Cultural Festival takes place each year during the entire month of May with most major events scheduled during the final two weeks.

Puerto Vallarta is also home to the world’s newest contemporary art festival. Known officially as Puerto Vallarta: Arte Contemporaneo, the festival is designed to bring together the work of Mexican and international artists. This year, the festival focused on artists from the United States and Mexico and featured panel discussions on issues as diverse as globalization, extended borders and the cultural identities of Mexican artists working in the United States. Many of the artists featured in this year’s festival exhibited work at prestigious venues such as the Whitney Biennial and the Tate Modern in London. Puerto Vallarta: Arte Contemporaneo plans to return next year during the final weekend of May with larger exhibits and more special events.

The local art scene is celebrated each year in November during the Festival de las Artes. During the final week of the month, nearly all of Puerto Vallarta’s art galleries stage elaborate openings and events that welcome art aficionados and curious travelers alike. As much of the work on display belongs to Mexican artists, including many Puerto Vallarta residents, many of the artists are on hand at the events to discuss the trade with art lovers. Now entering its 12th season, the Festival de las Artes is one of the best ways for tourists to experience the vibrant art scene of Puerto Vallarta. Best of all, most of the events during the festival are free of charge.

Though all the events mentioned here take place in either November or May, there is no shortage of similar events throughout the year in Puerto Vallarta. When accounting for Puerto Vallarta’s incredible scenery and cosmopolitan flair, it is no wonder that the world’s best flock to the city each year. When you come to Puerto Vallarta, plan on visiting some of these festivals where you can interact with remarkable artists, chefs and filmmakers while enjoying the lush backdrop of one of Mexico’s premier destinations.

For visitors who plan on traveling to the South American country of Mexico, I will be providing you with detailed, useful information for your journey. The primary airport in Mexico City is the Benito Juarez International commonly called Mexico City International Airport. Landing at the Juan Alvarez International Airport in Acapulco will place you in close proximity to many hotels.

The Las Brisas Acapulco, The Grand Mayan Acapulco Wyndham Resort and the Camino Real Acapulco Diamante are all located in less than a five mile radius from the airport. Since taxis, buses and rental car agencies are all available inside of the airport, you will get there in no time. The airport itself is the largest international airport in Mexico’s Southern-Pacific region.

Acapulco Beaches
The La Bonfil beach is one of the best beaches in Mexico for surfing. Because of the high waves, many surfers flock here to surf. The waves are so high that swimming is actually frowned upon by the locals. Settled between Puerto Marques and Revolcadero Beach, La Bonfilso beach is a safe friendly place to visit. Caleta Beach is one of the most visited beaches located in Acapulco.

Its main attraction is the water itself. Families often come just to swim but the fishing is also excellent here. If you plan on taking a trip to Mexico just for the beach, you may want to consider a hotel reservation at The Fairmont Acapulco Princess. This four star hotel is conveniently located on Revolcadero Beach near the General Juan N Alvarez Airport. Spas, dining and golf are some of the hotel’s prominent highlights. This one of a kind hotel sits on nearly five hundred acres, with over seven hundred and fifty plant species growing.

Cozumel Restaurants
A big draw to Mexico is its authentic Mexican food prepared by the natives. The Costa Brava Restaurant of Cozumel caters traditional Mexican dishes in addition to seafood. Other restaurants include Mi Chabelita, El Moro and El Foco all located in the downtown Cozumel area. It isn’t difficult to get other styles of food in the Cozumel area either. People visiting from different parts of the world will find restaurants that serve the same meals that they are used to eating back home. For instance, Guido’s banquet facilities cater Italian food, while Tony Rome’s restaurant and bar serve up steak and shrimp. Blue Haus located inside of All Riviera Resort has an International menu that caters to everyone.

Los Cabos Mexico
There is quite a bit of entertainment activity to keep you busy year round in Los Cabos. Golfing, horseback riding, sailing, fishing and cruise tours make this one of Mexico’s most sought after destinations. Often referred to as paradise by tourist, Los Cabos warm water beaches stay that way because of the warm humid temperatures there. Summer temperatures normally stay in the mid to upper nineties with very little rain fall during that time. Snorkeling and scuba diving activity there is highly recommended.

Whether you like fun in the sun or rest and relaxation at a spa, traveling to Mexico is the way to go. Nice people, great food and perfect weather all make the trip worthwhile. Visit Cancun, Acapulco, Los Cabos, Cozumel or any of the many cities located in Mexico. Get your plane, hotel and restaurant reservations done and come experience all that Mexico has to offer.

Whenever a city hosts a major sporting event, the local economy is injected with a new lease of life. All major economic growth drivers get a boost due to infrastructure related activities and tourism ahead of and during the event. Tourism is one industry which specifically benefits from the any sporting event. Athletic teams, their entourage, world press and spectators all help in increasing the inflow of tourists. Also, due to huge amount of press exposure, a buzz and awareness is created about the city which helps in attracting the tourism in no small way. Also, newer hotels & resorts, improvement in facilities & amenities make a city attractive for discerning world travelers. Puerto Vallarta will be no different, now that, it will be a secondary host of 2011 edition of the Pan American games.

The 16 th edition of Pan American games will be hosted by Guadalajara, Mexico. This will be the first time such a big sports event will be held in a city other than Mexico City. It has also been decided that the beautiful city of Puerto Vallarta will be the secondary host of the games. Puerto Vallarta will host four sports – sailing, triathlon, open water swimming and beach volleyball.

The city will receive 300 athletes, staff & representatives and not too mention press from all over Americas. The city will receive unprecedented national and international coverage. Puerto Vallarta will also receive promotion through organizations such as Global Sport, part of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which will be selling 3 day visit packages for Puerto Vallarta. The development activities to setup or ramp up the infrastructure will enhance the already popular water-sports culture. As you maybe aware, Puerto Vallarta Real Estate attracts large number of buyers of Puerto Vallarta homes since it offers exotic beaches and world class water sport facilities. The improvements will only make Puerto Vallarta Real Estate a more attractive proposition for US and Canadian citizens looking for holiday Homes in Mexico.

Preparation for the world class event has already started in right earnest. A new beach volleyball stadium, with capacity for 5000 spectators, will be constructed in Puerto Vallarta. The new stadium will be situated in the Agustín Flores Contreras sports complex. Infrastructure for the other sport competitions are already in place in Puerto Vallarta ‘s well established water sports facilities. The city will also provide the infrastructure for the celebrations of each sporting event.

To attract general public a route which runs along the waterfront will be used for Open Water swimming. This will provide spectators panoramic view of the competition and will be perfect setting considering the beauty of Puerto Vallarta ‘s beaches. The triathlon will be held in the marina area. The sailing competition requires only open sea which Puerto Vallarta boasts of plenty!

Pan American Games will enhance and cement Puerto Vallarta ‘s reputation as a premier vacation and real estate investment destination in Mexico.

You want to plan that vacation to that glorious tropical island but you’ve only heard of the tourist traps like Nassau, Bahamas or Montego Bay, Jamaica. You want a place without fifteen-story hotels, screaming crowds, and a thousand souvenir shops. You want a place where you can finally relax and recuperate from the smash and grab daily grind. Well, worry no longer. Below you will find eight of the most peaceful paradises in the world. But don’t wait a decade to choose one. By then, they may no longer be some of the best secret travel destinations.

1. Isla de Vieques, Puerto Rico: Because this little gem was controlled by the U.S. Navy until 2003, it lacks the crowds, tourist traps, tall buildings, and traffic of commercialized vacation spots. This is truly an unspoiled island with lush, rolling hills, tranquil lanes, and a pristine beach with bioluminescent waters. At night, under glittering stars, the surf truly lights up with glowing living organisms. It’s like an ethereal wonderland. Besides the stunning beauty, the island offers view of the final Spanish fort built in the Americas; it offers snorkeling, hiking, bicycling, and horseback riding on sleek horses. The residents are warm and personable and you will likely make a few friends before you leave. If you want a little more excitement for a few days, ferry the six miles to San Juan and perhaps stay in their huge resident resort with multi-level, infinity pools and five restaurants to fit your every mood and taste.

2. Secret Beach, Kauai: Nestled at the base of a sheer cliff just north of Kilaua, it’s hard to find anything about this hideaway to criticize. Cottages nestled on the mountainsides offer a panoramic view. The cottages are furnished with quaint furniture, Jacuzzi, kitchen utensils, appliances, Kauai guidebooks, beach supplies, and even laundry detergent. Enjoy at least a few meals gazing out from your own deck. The beach is private and easy to walk to. Snorkel on Tunnels Reef, have lunch at the Tropical Taco, view the Waimea Canyon (Grand Canyon of the Pacific) and Wailus and Opaeka Falls. Kayak peacefully on the Lanalei River, buy something sweet from the Kilauea Bakery and buy fresh seafood from the fish market across from the King Lung shops. Grill the fish yourself at your cottage for a meal you’ll never forget. This is a Hawaii worlds away from the crazy commercized chaos of Waikiki.

3. Waykaya Club and Spa, Fiji: This is a private 2,200-acre retreat belonging to Fiji’s 333 islands, featuring serene lagoons, majestic cliffs, gorgeous beaches, and encircled by a virgin coral reef. Start off with the stunning orientation walk to begin tasting the wild natural beauty and charm. You will see tropical forests, spectacular lookout points, pristine beaches, and a wildlife sanctuary teaming with feral horses, pigs, deer, and goat. At the Club and Spa you will find a 9-hole golf course, lighted tennis courts, and equipment for a quick game of croquet. The Club will pack a gourmet picnic lunch for you take anywhere your heart leads you. Play a game of billiards or do a vigorous workout followed by a luxurious massage. Tour the organic gardens, the Fijian wood carvers, the cooking demonstrations, or the exotic bird watching. Play beach volleyball, or sit back and enjoy a native dance pageant or Kava ceremony. Then on Sunday, if you like, attend the Village Church to hear the Fiji choir and enjoy the 30-minute service. You will never get bored at the Waykaya Club.

4. Jellyfish Lake, Palau: Palau is a wonderland located about 500 miles from the Philippines. The limestone islands in this area were formed by many thousands of year of coral accretion slowly lifting out of the sea. The one jellyfish lake open to the public is on the uninhabited island of Macharchar. Somehow along the way, the jellyfish have lost their sting, so divers or snorkelers can swim safely among the 1.2 million translucent, orange orbs ranging in size from marble- to volley ball-sized. As they pulsate through the azure waters, they bump harmlessly against snorkelers and drift on. It is doubtful that you will be able to tear yourself away from the jellyfish, but, if so, the sea kayaking among the Rock Islands is superb, and there are fascinating World War II relics to be found on the island of Peleliu. For breathtaking view and nice accommodations, try Koror’s Cliffside Hotel.

5. Santorini, Greece: This island is actually a live volcano, but it isn’t expected to belch again in our lifetime. The volcanic yield has resulted in black sand beaches and soil that grows some of the best wine grapes in existence. Because of the volcanic soil Santorini also grows some of the sweetest tomatoes in the world. You must sample the fried tomato balls (Keftadas). You may never see a more awe-inspiring site as when you gaze from the rim of the volcano and watch tiny boats cross the royal blue waters. If you can tear yourself away from that, you must visit the nearby town of Oia, with its stunning sunsets. Two terrific restaurants to visit are the Saltsa and the Nyhteri. Perhaps you can find lodging among the villages overlooking the submerged volcano. And two hotels that can be recommended are the Villa Kalimera and the Volcano View Villas.

6. The Caves Resort, Negril, Jamaica: The resort sits atop honeycomb, limestone cliffs overlooking the sea. It features eleven exclusive Cliffside accommodations, two main dining gazebos, and private cave dining. If you ever get tired of the view and the pampering, you can watch dolphins, jet ski, go horseback riding, or enjoy the sauna, Jacuzzi, or the saltwater swimming pools. The rooms of the resort overflow with ambience: music for whatever your vibe, candles and scented oils, the most comfortable beds, and gracious hospitality. Rick’s Cafe is one of the greatest places to eat. Sheddy Williams has been the head chef for 15 years. Enjoy the rich Jamaican coffee, the fresh fruit plate, mango daiquiris and a full course dinner. It is guaranteed that no matter how frayed your nerves when you arrived, you will leave the Caves refreshed.

7. Christ Church, Barbados: Why would you visit the Barbados? Well, for one thing, the residents love tourists and the crime rate is almost non-existent. You can cruise on a catamaran, swim with sea turtles, and watch the antics of hilarious green monkeys. The surf is consistently perfect for surfing , kite surfing, or windsurfing. You can watch a cricket game or play on a world class golf course. You can stroll the plantations, lush gardens or the rum distilleries. Then there are wonderful restaurants such as Oistin’s Fish Fry, the Restaurant at the South Sea, and Just Grillin’. You will love it.

8. Long Island, Bahamas: We’re not pushing Long Island alone. It is just an example of the Bahamian islands that are still beautiful, serene, and unspoiled by raucous crowds and unabashed commercialism. A massive spine of ancient reef gives the 80-mile island two faces: the sheer cliffs and caves of the east coast and the soft, sandy, mangrove-lined lee side which washes into the Bahamas Bank. Long Island does have numerous shallow and deep scuba diving sites. But it is best known for Dean’s Blue Hole, a vast abyss that tunnels down about 600 feet. Travel writers grow bored and jaded after seeing hundreds of beautiful island sites. However, a writer for Trip Atlas raved, “Long Island is a true hidden gem—the real paradise island of the Bahamas!” This island is also home to Columbus Point, towering memorial to Christopher Columbus, perched high atop a hill at the island’s northernmost tip. You will find everything in this place: sloping hills, vast beaches, high cliffs, gardens, caves, old plantation ruins, quaint villages, and pink sand with intricate seashells.

Now I’m feel a little sorry for you. You’re going to have to choose between all these incredible places and that’s the hardest part!

Taste the rum and practice the Salsa on the Caribbean island paradise of Puerto Rico. The islands are located in the Caribbean sea, just east of the Dominican republic, with about 3/4 Spanish and 1/4 English speaking natives. But don’t worry: all tourist areas are primarily English speaking. Puerto Rico is a commonwealth of the United States which includes one main island, Greater Antilles, and several smaller islands and keys. While largely mountainous, you’ll find spectacular, sandy beaches along the northern coastline.

Imagine sunbathing, surfing, kayaking and golfing by day, then partying by night within mild, tropical marine climate ranging between 75 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit year-round. Escape from the rat race and experience some of the finest dining, gaming, pulsing discos and bars.

Indulge on the finest Spanish cuisine with a unique American, African and Taino twist. Taste succulent corn and fruits, crunchy cod fritters, black bean soup, kettle-cooked stews, lamb, fried beefsteak and onions, plus barbecued pig. For desert, island guests enjoy some of the finest banana cupcakes, custard and nisperos de batata, or sweet potato balls with cloves, coconut and cinnamon. Then, don’t forget to tantalize your taste buds with Puerto Rican coffee, beer or rum of any shade, the national drink.

As the sun sets, the fun explodes from the cobble-stoned city of San Juan to Santurce and the Condado-Isla Verde strip. Place your bet at hotel casinos, enjoy fantastic live jazz and wild nightclubs. Then take a midnight dip in the temperate tropical waters. Visit Mosquito Bay in Vieques and watch the bioluminescence display among beach-lined mangrove trees. Tour the Phosphorescent Bay in La Parguera, where affordable boat rides escort you into darkness to watch a thrilling display of underwater fish flashing neon-green lights.
